Having had a break from serving on this Board, and inspired by the excellent work done by current Board members these past few years, I feel ready to come back with fresh ideas for further stabilizing and slightly improving communications structure on both the social outreach and the technological ends of things. Now, more than ever, I believe that ISSM has an important academic/social place in this world and its ever-growing legacy should continue to thrive. In researching to teach a course called Media, Power and Culture over the past several years, I've learned a lot about the philosophies and changing trends behind promotions and outreach (not to mention propaganda, fake news, and other lovely approaches to communications). I'd like to put a little theory into praxis.

From Luiz:

I find the ISSM to be the most genial and supportive academic organization I have ever belonged to. I believe it is a source of very meaningful and engaging scholarship. In a time when barriers between countries are rising, extremism is the word of the day, and international students and communities are being neglected, a perspective from outside the US and Europe seems ever more necessary. I have served two previous terms in this society, and I believe my perspective could help the ISSM to stay truly international in these troubled times. As a graduate student and scholar from Brazil, and with plenty of experience with administration and conference organising, I would do my best to ensure the society stays inclusive and keeps serving students from all over the world. My goal will be to maintain, and hopefully increase, ISSM's presence at a broad range of conferences, while maintaining the centrality of our own conference. I would also like to see the ISSM expand its focus more globally, both in the kinds of sessions we sponsor, the kind of work we do as medievalism scholars, and the breadth of our presence beyond Europe and North America!
